Tech Juice 2511- Part I: Impact of Distruptive Technologies on Aviation Mainteanance

Image
Introduction 1.  Disruption in military doctrines by technology is not new.  We have constantly been subjected to it.  However, the pace of disruption due to what we call Industry 4.0 technologies is rapid and far-reaching.  Humans with our inherited genetics can be expected to first apply these technologies to war.  We usually make the mistake that the nature of warfare is relatively static and technology only refines and improves the instruments of war.  Industry 4.0 technologies will not just improve the instruments of war but change the very nature of war itself.  Even preceding these technologies, many new facets of warfare, such as electronic, cyber and information warfare, have already become prevalent.    2.  I have covered some technologies in Tech Juice articles 2501-2510.  These are not exhaustive and attempt to give a flavor of what we are talking about.  The impact of equipment maintenance and availability is a maj...

Tech Juice 2510: Impact of Industry 4.0 Technologies on Industrial Materials

Image
1.  Industry 4.0 is the new version of an industry that has emerged through the influence of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (Machine learning), the Internet of Things (IoT), additive manufacturing (3D printing), Robotics, Digital Twins, etc.   The impact of these technologies on material science has been immense.  Their ability to estimate, learn, simulate and build entirely from a knowledge base has transformed the industry's ability to discover new materials, deploy them on applications, monitor their performance through a lifecycle and update learning to repeat this cycle better than before is truly a major impact. Accelerated Advanced Material Development 2. For example, traditional aluminium alloys (Al7075/Al6061) are unsuitable for 3D printing as they are prone to cracking.  Boeing  used the magic of AI, Machine Learning, Big data, modelling, and simulation to  accelerate the development  of HRL Laboratories' HRL7A77 aluminium ...

Tech Juice 2509 : How Biological Implant Technologies will Impact Industry 4.0

Image
Introduction 1.  As  populations age, traditionally, manufacturing has moved to countries with populations of lower average age. As most developed economies had ageing populations, China became a manufacturing superpower . Automation may offset this trend to a great extent as India takes its place in terms of the age of the population. Another technology that will offset this trend is biological implants.   Biological implants can do more with a smaller workforce. Enhanced Human Machine Integration 2. Implants will allow for collaboration between man and machine, compensating for each other's weaknesses and achieving great productivity improvements.  Brain-computer interfaces, essentially neural implants ,  would directly control machines with thoughts rather than speech or physical interfaces.  This will greatly enhance the power of robotics in the new industrial revolution. 3. Augmented reality is a well-stabilised technology.  With Augmen...

Tech Juice 2508: Conventional Vs Blockchain Databases, Impact on Industry 4.0

Image
Conventional databases have inhabited almost all facets of our lives.   Hackers and corrupt elements have repeatedly demonstrated their ability for data breaches and even data corruption in traditional databases.   BITCOIN is a currency that has caught the world’s imagination and has even become legal tender in some countries using a blockchain technology-based database.    How has this been possible?   What is the difference between a conventional database and a blockchain-based database?   Lets examine.           Conventional and blockchain-based databases serve different purposes and operate in distinct ways. Let’s look at some key differences:   Data Structure A conventional database uses a centralised architecture with tables, rows, and columns. Data is structured and can be modified or deleted from the front and back ends. In contrast, blockchain databases use a decentralised ledger structure, where da...
